A CT scan, which stands for Computed Tomography scan, is a medical imaging technique used to produce detailed cross-sectional images of the body’s internal structures. It utilizes X-rays and advanced computer processing to generate these images. During a CT scan, the patient lies on a table that moves through a doughnut-shaped machine called a CT scanner. The scanner emits X-ray beams from various angles around the body, and detectors within the machine measure the amount of radiation that passes through the body.
The data collected is then processed by a computer to create detailed cross-sectional images, or slices, of the body. These images provide valuable information about the bones, organs, blood vessels, and soft tissues, allowing doctors to diagnose and evaluate a wide range of medical conditions, such as tumors, fractures, infections, and internal injuries. CT scans are particularly useful for detecting abnormalities in the brain, chest, abdomen, and pelvis. They are often preferred for their ability to produce high-resolution images quickly, aiding in efficient diagnosis and treatment planning. However, because CT scans involve exposure to ionizing radiation, appropriate precautions are taken to minimize radiation dose and ensure patient safety.
